Make and Break: How well does your system perform, and how do you know?

Sydney
Programming Languages, Cloud & Tools

In this session, I will talk about performance testing, performance analysis, and reliability: how do you make sure your system can perform "well enough", and keep doing so even when things go wrong? I will focus on the context of Atlassian's data management platform, which manages millions of databases of customer data located around the world, and our approach to ensuring our platform is reliable and performant.

We will look at topics such as:

  • Practical examples of performance testing
  • How many performance tests should you run?
  • How do you know if one system performs better than another?
  • How do variance and burstiness affect performance?
  • What does it mean for a system to be reliable?
  • How can you build for reliability?
